About GHC

Canada’s leading collective of energy saving hospitals.

What is Greening Health Care?

Greening Health Care is a grlandscape_1425652594-popmech_hospital_01ound-breaking program that goes beyond energy reporting and benchmarking to establish energy targets for individual health care facilities, and thus how much energy each hospital can expect to save.

The program is based on the concept of conservation potential and setting energy targets based on utility data and building characteristics.  This knowledge of conservation potential provides the foundation and direction for effective strategy to improve energy efficiency.

Collectively, our member hospitals are building the knowledge and practice of energy efficiency, uncovering energy saving opportunities and sharing their knowledge with peers. They use Greening Health Care’s data-driven, performance-based conservation methodology to understand their energy profile identify implementation measures and set priorities for action.

Program Highlights:

  • Over 1.5 million GigaJoules saved since 2004
  • Over $28 million in cost savings
  • Reduced GHG emissions by nearly 85,000 tonnes

Why Join Greening Health Care

Efficient Health Care starts with Energy Efficiency.  A healthy community includes a healthy environment.  Our members save energy and money while leading the health care sector’s charge to save the planet. The success of the program stems from the collaboration between member hospitals, utilities, government and the private sector .  As a member of the program, you will receive analysis of your hospital’s conservation potential helping your organization identify opportunities that provide significant energy savings.

Members also have access to the Greening Health Care webinars, workshops and annual forum .  The webinars and workshops bring together member hospitals together to discuss a diverse set of topics relevant to hospital energy efficiency and building operations.

How is GHC different?

Greening Health Care is Performance-based and data-driven with the largest database of hospital  energy consumption in Canada.
The Greening Health Care approach is unique in giving facility managers, directors, and operators, the tools to understand their data and energy performance of their buildings, so they’re not at the mercy of reactive energy planning and sales pitches.

“The data tells the story.  If I know what the data is saying, I know where the savings are.  The data tells you what the issues are, right down to the level of the building’s systems.”
Michael Bonnah, West Park Healthcare Centre

It means I’m informed when contractors and others say they’re solving these issues for me.”
Steve Stamogiannos, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

The Greening Health Care Mission

Our mission is to help our member hospitals become leaders in energy efficiency and by doing so reduce their impact on the environment, contribute to mitigating climate change and make their communities more sustainable.

The data is everything. Armed with benchmarking data from Canada’s most extensive health care energy use database, facilities managers can take control of their buildings and processes and stop being at the mercy of contractors with specialization in only one area. Our database is now so extensive, that we can drill down and becnhmark at the level of building systems in order to find the greatest potential for practical and economical savings.
